- Billy Joe
Together is a 2025 horror film starring real life couple Dave Franco and Allison Brie in the roles of Tim & Millie respectively. This was my first exposure to Dave and boy oh boy do them Franco genes run strong or what?! Director Michael Shanks brings us the tale of two hopeless lovers in a clearly failing co-dependent relationship. We join Tim & Millie on the cusp of a new adventure having moved far away from the city and with it everyone they know.
Not long after this they become exposed to a mysterious & strange phenomenon....just as we get exposed to the many flaws in their relationship. If you have seen the poster(you're here, so you likely have) then you ought to be able to figure out what's really going on here. If not, then far be it from me to spoil a good surprise. While I don't intend to give away too much, in order to properly attribute credit and debit, I will be referring to this as a body horror film. For now though lets bring together all the best and the worst elements with the Missed Mark Method.

Any viewer who has experienced these feelings in a relationship should feel a strong sense of relation to the emotions on the screen.
The effects are the glue that....ok...fine, enough together puns. When given the opportunity the effects team does a great job at creating unnerving and realistic body horror scenes. I'm not going to ding the effects for the ceiling they are written into, at least not too much, we will cover that further later.
In a world where a lot of films begin to lose the plot attempting to create more lore than needed, Together takes a less is more approach, not really ever answering a ton of questions. In a world where a lot of films begin to lose the plot attempting to create more lore than needed, Together takes a less is more approach, not really ever answering a ton of questions. In one sense this is good to not put stress on a foundation that isn't up to code to begin with, but in reality I can't help but feel like questions weren't answered because the writers simply couldn't think of a good enough reason to explain it. Still, the story is enjoyable and intriguing enough to warrant a made mark, albeit somewhat leaning too far on the side of predictability.
Sadly without question the most disappointing aspect of the movie. Imagine you are presented with a beautiful sports car, a tank of gas and an open highway. Isn't it a shame to not let loose and really tear up the road, laying down on the gas pedal? Not according to this director. The movie shows it clearly has an effects team capable of
Sadly without question the most disappointing aspect of the movie. Imagine you are presented with a beautiful sports car, a tank of gas and an open highway. Isn't it a shame to not let loose and really tear up the road, laying down on the gas pedal? Not according to this director. The movie shows it clearly has an effects team capable of producing gnarly body horror effects, but instead opts for the slow ride, and not the kind with a promising payoff at the end. The effects used on the scenes we DO get are strong enough to save face, along with a few decent jump scares(the best of which, in my opinion, is not really even related to the greater scheme of the movie). Perhaps I have simply been spoiled by The Substance, but as a man usually highly susceptible to body horror I found the film surprisingly tame compared to my expectations.
Casual horror fans and horror enthusiasts alike can share in neutral enjoyment of this one, but the more hardcore gruesome goobers will need to taper expectations going into the theater. I can't say I regret seeing it in theaters, but only because I utilized my movie theater's subscription pass instead of paying directly for just the film. If your theater offers something similar, or if you have a few bucks to spare, give this a whirl in the theater for full impact on some of the jump scares. Go in for a fun and gross time, but don't expect any genre defining horror scenes to have nightmares about later, and you won't wind up feeling like a missed mark.
